Meet our new Coach!
Whistler Nordics is excited to introduce our new Head Coach, Mia Serratore.
Mia will be leading our Youth Race Program, coaching Youth Skill Development Programs and on the trails with our Adult Program. We are excited for her expertise and passion - welcome Mia!
Where did you learn to ski? At the Kamview Nordic Centre in Thunder Bay Ontario. I was introduced to skiing at the age of 3 and grew up skiing in the Jackrabbits program.
What was my job before before moving to Whistler? Before this role I was in Kelowna working with Spirit North, a non-profit founded by Becki Scott that aimed to empower Indigenous youth through sport and play. I spent the past 4 years organizing and leading xc ski, biathlon and mountain bike programs in different communities on the Syilx Okanagan Territory and the Secwepemc Territory.
What is your favourite ski trail? It’s the loop from Silver Star to Sovereign lake, but Whistler Olympic Park was one of my favourite places to race so I'm really excited to ski there again and get to know the trails.
What is your favourite part of coaching? Being a part of someone else's journey is something really special to me. Getting to see each athlete overcome challenges and work towards their goals however big or small is something I love to be a part of.
Climb or descent? Nothing beats going fast downhill.
Special cross-country skiing memory: One of my most memorable moments in ski racing was winning my first medal at Nationals in the 5km skate in Whistler in 2014. I always wanted to win a medal at Nationals and didn't know it was something I was even capable of doing till I crossed the line and saw my name in second place.
